Bighnaharta Nepal is thrilled to announce the launch of Phase III of its flagship project, "Bio-engineering Social Enterprise for Disaster Risk Reduction and Livelihood Upliftment." From 2019 to 2023, Phases I and II had a significant impact on the marginalized Chepang and Tamang communities in Rakshirang Rural Municipality, Makwanpur District. The organization mobilized 1,610 households to plant 900,000 Broom Grass (Thysoleana Maxima) saplings, mitigating landslides by 90% across 1,174 prone terrains and 432 barren lands. The women of the community were trained in broom making, resulting in the production of 800,000 brooms under the "Khoriya Co. Kucho" brand, thereby boosting household incomes by NPR 30-40,000 per harvest. Additionally, Bighnaharta Nepal pioneered the production of organic Nepali paper from agro-waste.
Phase III, running from mid-2024 to mid-2026, will see the organization expand its efforts to mobilize 1,000 households across Mahakunlung Rural Municipality, Solukhumbu; Dhangadi Mai Municipality, Siraha; and Rapti Municipality, Chitwan. New activities will include the creation of an app to monitor activities and archive impacts, providing access to finance for beneficiaries, and conducting data-driven technical research for awareness and advocacy.
With the aim of building sustainable communities across Nepal and beyond, Bighnaharta Nepal is committed to making this project bigger, better, and more impactful.
